summer of 1960 by Ken Back…
…and is still run by the family today!
About us.
Ken was a traditional signwriter who started KBS Signs from his garage over 60 years ago! Over the years Ken built up a reputation for quality yet affordable work, making him one of the most popular signwriters in Devon. In his spare time, Ken passionately taught his trade at night school.
His dedication to the trade was infectious, and also present in two of his sons who joined their father, and over the next few years the business started to grow. KBS progressed to their first commercial unit on Marsh Barton Trading Estate where the family-run business serviced clients such as Coca Cola, Wrigley’s, Vision Express, Wetherspoons and tons of local business to.
When Ken’s eldest son joined the company, a wealth of IT knowledge was injected, which led to KBS being one of the first signage production companies to own a website in the UK alongside owning one of the first vinyl cutting plotter machines in the South West. KBS Signs was now one of the market leaders in the UK signage arena.
Over time, as the business grew from strength to strength, the whole Back family became involved making KBS Signs a truly family-run business. Nowadays KBS Signs is run by Ken’s youngest son Mike and youngest daughter Diane, along with two of Ken’s grandchildren, with every confidence the 4th generation will successfully lead KBS Signs through the now, and into the future.

Mike Back leads the family sign manufacture company KBS Signs. “We’re the local sign shop with national contracts” says Mike. It’s the family-ownership which gives such attention to detail, with speed of delivery combined with rigorous quality procedures.

Now in the third generation, this family business has worked alongside the design guru Sir Terrence Conran designing the Vision Express shops, British European Airways, JD Wetherspoon, Prêt a Manger, Walkabout pubs, Past Times.
While most well known for work with national accounts, KBS Signs always makes time to put local and regular customers first, including Treliske Hospital where KBS designed the entire signage system.
